Management Methods for Young Boreal Forests: The NordicForestry Project
Managing young boreal forests requires balancing different forest owner goals while ensuring ecological, economic, and social sustainability. Traditional management approaches often lack the level of detail and flexibility needed to reflect these diverse objectives and adapt to evolving forest conditions.
Solution
NordicForestry is a cross‑border initiative carried out in close cooperation between Arbonaut, the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, the Natural Resources Institute Finland, and the Finnish Forest Centre.
Within the project, Arbonaut contributes advanced multi-level analysis methods that enable more precise forest inventory and planning. The approach integrates multiple complementary data sources:
- Open forest resource data
- Public remote-sensing data
- Harvester data (HPR)
Combining these datasets enables a more detailed understanding of forest structure and terrain, supporting improved decision-making for young forest management.
Impact
The project supports the development of more adaptive forest management methods tailored to forest owners’ objectives.
This contributes to more sustainable forest use across the Nordic boreal region, strengthening long-term ecological resilience while supporting economic and operational planning.
