Taking Remote Sensing of 80,000 hectares to a New Level in Jokkmokk Forests
Background
Before working with Arbonaut and MW Forest Sense, Jokkmokk Allmänning relied on more traditional remote-sensing methods to inventory and plan management for their 80,000 hectares of woodland.
By 2021, they saw an opportunity to review the way of working.
Jokkmokk Allmänning turned to Arbonaut and MW Forest Sense, both being the digital forestry specialists within MW Group.
Solution
Using Forest Sense’s advanced remote-sensing capabilities, a broad range of high-resolution data was collected across Jokkmokk’s forests.
Arbonaut then analyzed all available materials, and together we developed a comprehensive forest ecosystem inventory, including:
- New digital forest management features
- Ecological value mapping
- Clear insights on nature values and carbon sinks
- Biodiversity and valuable habitat insights to classify forest ecological values
Forwarder mobility
Forestry competition index
Seasonal harvestability
Plans and decisions became more information-based, and valuations proved the classification highly accurate. Our remote sensing and analysis provided both increased precision and higher cost-effectiveness, making it possible to update the forest management plans more frequently.
Outcomes
Jokkmokk Allmänning received a holistic view of the forest potential: not only the economic, but also the ecological and climate benefits.
”We want to continue to use the forest in a responsible way, driving development of the industry forward, so this investment was completely right. It has been a pleasure to collaborate with the professionals at MW and its partner, Arbonaut. With this precise and broad information, we can really be a frontrunner in digitalized forestry in Sweden.” — Christian Rimpi, Jokkmokks Allmänning
